You could use either National Express (coach) or National Rail. Going by rail will be more expensive and take approximately an hour less (2 hours compared to 3 hours by coach, not taking into account the time getting to the station the coach/train leaves from).

Both National Rail and National Express offer discounts for booking in advance. Depending on your age/circumstances you may be elegible to buy a rail/coach discount card - which typically offer a 1/3 saving.

A National Express "funfare" London to Nottingham return is about 22GBP, a "standard" return is approx 28GBP.

A National Rail "advance" return costs roughly 35-40GBP, and a "saver/cheap day return" costs 40-50GBP.
