How far does a car travel before stopping question?

A car is moving at 40 mi/h along a straight line when the driver sees a light turn red.

She hits the brakes when she is 75 ft from the light and decelerates at the rate of 20 ft per second squared. How far does she travel before stopping?How far does a car travel before stopping question?First convert 40 mph to feet per second.

(Left for you to do on your own.)

Once you have the initial velocity, determine how long it takes to come to a stop

(Remember - acceleration is *change* in velocity over time

therefore, *time* to come to a stop = Velocity divided by acceleration.

Once you have the *time*, then the distance formula becomes simple

d = V(0)*t + 1/2 *(a)*t^2

(Remember that -a- is a negative....)
