What is the best city to travel to in Australia?

I would like to visit Australia. I have researched the cities of Perth, Melbourne, and Sydney. I had a travel agent tell me I would at least need to save $7,000 to have enough to even book the vacation for ten days to two weeks for hotel, flight, and car for two people. I am only going to one city, but I would love to know what it is like in the major urban areas, even outside these cities. I need an a great aquarium in the city because we are obsessed with them. What is the best city to travel to in Australia?DARWIN!!!What is the best city to travel to in Australia?
sydney's probably the best. i've been there only once for 3 days, wasn't enough. and there was an awesome aquarium there. What is the best city to travel to in Australia? They are all good, though I would leave Darwin off the itinerary, lol.
I'd choose Sydney. All 3 are nice places to stay, but Sydney has the most tourist things - Harbor bridge, opera house, nearby Katoomba in the blue mountains, shopping, beaches, etc.

All 3 have aquariums, and to be honest and I liked them all. But as of about a year ago the Sydney aquarium has two dugongs, which might be an added bonus for you. What is the best city to travel to in Australia?Melbourne. Sydney's over-rated.

Look into Brisbane/Cairns, as well. What is the best city to travel to in Australia?

Melbourne is a fantastic, friendly City. It has the best Food, Fashion, Shopping %26amp; Night Life. The Great Ocean Road is only an hour away and is very worth doing. What is the best city to travel to in Australia?
Even though i live in Adelaide, i would say Melbourne. It has so much to see - just ask the hotel you stay at, plus they have a great aquarium :)

or... you could go to Brisbane because they have the theme parks which are water based (Some of them) which resemble aquariums haha... although i've never been to Brisbane i have stayed on the Gold Coast and places around that, always tonnes to do!
Melbourne is great BUT, Sydney is more a tourist destination due to its famous landmarks like harbour bridge, opera house, olympic park, sydney Aquarium, bondi beach and the blue mountains. the CBD isn't to bad although their are many quieter suburbs.
For about $7,000 you could fly into Cairns in northern Queensland and get a Pioneer or Greyhound coach down the eastern coast. This way you will see the Great Barrier Reef. If you come at this time of year it is the warmest part of Australia. You will come to Brisbane - the capital of Queensland first. You could spend a few days there and on the Gold Coast and then go onto Byron Bay by bus.

Then you could bus onto Sydney. It is by far the most cosmopolitan city in Australia although Melbournians always argue that Melbourne is. You could then fly back to the states from Sydney. The idea is to book the whole bus journey in advance along with the flight. If you are young you can stay fairly economically in Back Packers.

By hiring a car and staying in a motel/hotel for two weeks you will not see a lot of Australia.

Good Luck
It depends on what you want.

Sydney is very city orientated so there is everything city like in there but obviously with a city feel. If you're from a big city it really won't be that different, except there's Australian stuff. If you go to Sydney you can see the Opera House and Sydney Harbour bridge which you can climb.

Perth has some good beaches but is mostly a city like any other. I don't know much about Perth you'll have to do your research.

Brisbane is good for beaches, sun-baking and sunny weather although right now it's winter here so you're best to go to Brisbane between about November and March (my recommendation). Brisbane/Queensland has some beautiful beaches, tropical weather, the great barrier reef, Seaworld - the adventure park, Movieworld - another theme park, Dreamworld - yet another theme park and the Great barrier reef. If you're up for natural beauty and sunny weather than you ought to go to Brisbane.

Darwin: That's a true stereotypical Aussie experience. You can see a lot of the wildlife and you can see Uluru (well Uluru is more Alice Springs which is way south of Darwin but both are in the Northern Territory). You can also see a lot of the native wildlife in their natural habitat e.g. kangaroos. You can go to many wildlife parks and bush walking is a must. In Darwin you can try things like a friend of mine who went (I'm from down south) tried snake and I've eaten crocodile which is served up there. (Crocodile tastes like chicken, seriously!). There are a lot of crocodiles up there so don't go skinny-dipping and there are lots of box jellyfish too and they hurt so be careful.

Canberra: That's our capital and here you can see Parliament House - where parliament sits obviously, Kirrabili House (spelling?) where the Prime minister and his/her family lives. Lots of war memorials are all about Canberra but other than that I don't think there's a huge amount there.

Melbourne: Melbourne is excellent for shopping and things like that. So if you want a real good shopping spree Melbourne is the place to go! Also if you go outside Melbourne to places like Ballarat there are some interesting olden-day mining towns.

Adelaide: Adelaide has a lot of festivals so if you like the arts - singing, dancing, cabaret, plays etc than Adelaide is the place to be. If you go at the right time and get tickets you could go to one of these festivals. Being from that state I've been to a few and they're great! Outer Adelaide also has some wildlife parks and South Australia has some excellent wineries so if you like your wine go to SA. I'm sorry but Adelaide no longer has an Aquarium but it is a place to consider.

Personally in order to really see Australia you need to go all around but for your purposes I'd recommend Melbourne.
Bingalee has got it completely wrong.

If you are only going to stay in ONE city, you are not going to see much.

10 days and your holiday will be taken up with travelling and jet lag.

Darwin in June and July is one of the most wonderful cities in the world.

The weather is fantastic.

If you are just going to stay in the city, rent a bike. You will not need a car if you nare going to stay in the city.

If you want to see more of Australia, take more time off work and go for 6 months.
