How do I become a Certified Travel Agent so that I can open my own business?

I am very interested in being a travel agent. I am looking for any advice on what to do %26amp; what not to do along the way. Do you have to be a certified travel agent? If so, where do you take classes, etc? Can you suggest any good companies to work for so that I can get my training in to open my own business? Any positive thoughts %26amp;/or suggestions are highly appreciated. It is really not a good business to get into now. Travel agencies make very little money, and most people use the internet now. Tour guide might be a better option, or an agency that specializes in a specific segment of trave - adventure, single seniors, Middle East, etc.



The agent I know had their company bought out and they now only do corporate travel, and it's basically phone work from a cubicle.



A company that hires a new agent will likely require a non-compete contract forbidding you from opening your own business for 2-3 years AFTER leaving their employement.
